Jung Han Kim
South Korean-born Jung Han Kim works in oil and chronicles the land and streetscapes of San Francisco, where he has lived and painted since coming to this country in 2001. He earned his Master of Fine Arts Cum Laude in Seoul, and then received a second master’s degree at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2004, where he eventually also taught from 2005 until 2014. Kim has participated in worldwide solo and group shows, recently exhibiting at the de Young Museum in 2020, and has won multiple awards and been published since graduating.
Kim’s use of color, texture and shadowing create three-dimensional scenes that invite a viewer in. The spontaneity of depicting everyday life with the backdrop of the scenery in San Francisco makes for pieces that will remain timeless. Kim captures the moment in a fresh combination of representational, impressionistic and abstract.
“I am drawn to the intensity of photorealism and the detachment of minimalism. My subjects are often banal and trite, as are the scenes of my life.”
