Studio Shop Gallery is pleased to present "SELF-ish: An Exploration of Identity," a compelling group exhibition featuring the works of new gallery artists Melinda Matyas, Darcy J. Sears, and Steven Spazuk, alongside established artist Melinda Cootsona. The exhibition will be on view from September 13th through October 5th, 2024.
"SELF-ish" delves into the diverse and complex nature of self-perception and identity. Through a figurative lens, each artist offers a unique interpretation of what it means to be "self-ish," examining themes of introspection, vulnerability, transformation and the personal connection we have to nature.
- Melinda Matyas presents thought-provoking portraits that capture the nuanced expressions of her subjects, inviting viewers to consider the silent stories behind each face. In her creative process color and texture are equally important, as well as the deconstruction of forms which allows her to find an equilibrium between figuration and abstraction. Though she considers herself a figurative painter, the dynamism she creates through breaking up the forms often makes her work look abstract from a close view.
- Darcy J. Sears uses her playful approach to explore the fluidity of identity, creating works that challenge traditional notions of selfhood. Primarily interested in line and form – the contours of the human body are being portrayed in all its imperfections. All sizes and shapes are beautiful and complete in the artist’s eye. The artist’s emphasis in the sculptures is capturing mood, spirit and the essence of who they are.
- Steven Spazuk employs his distinctive "fumage" technique to craft ethereal portraits that blur the boundaries between humans and the natural world – inviting viewers to explore the diverse range of species depicted and contemplate their personal connection with nature.
- Melinda Cootsona, a veteran of the gallery, brings a fresh perspective with her new series of paintings that delve into the internal landscapes of her subjects, revealing the depth and complexity of the human spirit. Always being fascinated by “in-between” times - the transition both literally and figuratively from one space to another. Her subjects exist in these thresholds of experience, sometimes a small daily occurrence and, at others, a life-changing event.
"We're thrilled to introduce new artists to our gallery's rich programming, offering not just fresh work but also unique mediums, such as Steven Spazuk's innovative fumage technique. It's important for us to stay current with the latest trends, while also showcasing works that complement our established artists like Melinda Cootsona. We're particularly excited to bring a European perspective with Melinda Matyas, whose work was featured in John Seed's 'Disrupted Realism' book. Our aim is to continually bring the latest trends in contemporary art to our community, enriching the dialogue and inspiring our audience", explains Gallery Director, Stephanie Martin.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 13th from 5-7pm providing an opportunity for guests to engage with the art.
