For this graduation season, which is being held under unusual circumstances, we wanted to honor the grads with a light-hearted exhibition to offer a bit of levity. Many Studio Shop Gallery clients are already familiar with the whimsical sculpture of ceramic artist Fred Yokel, from playful human figures to textured wall tiles and cartoonish animal critters. The featured image at the top of the page is titled, “The Winner is…,” and is not only for athletes, but it honors every graduate who pulled an all-nighter to make it to the finish line to earn their diploma. Following is a list of Yokel’s critters as college mascots. See how many you know before reading the list.
Cardinal – hint, we are starting close to home.
Beaver – Oregon State University
Husky – University of Washington
Buffalo – University of Colorado Boulder, aka CU Boulder
Fox – This one is a bit obscure. The red fox is the mascot for Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Elephant – Even though University of Alabama is known as the Crimson Tide, their mascot is an elephant named Big Al.
And as a culmination of this exhibition honoring graduates, and really for everyone, we have another creation of Fred Yokel, this titled, “On the Move.”
For all of the “winners” out there and families of winners, whether you are a Cardinal or a Buffalo, a Red Fox or a Husky, let’s hope and pray that we are all “On the Move” to a brighter tomorrow.
